Henry Jackson Society
  • Over the 2014 Summer in July I took part in a 2 week internship programme at the British-based political think-tank Henry Jackson Society. During my time there I worked as a research assistant on a range of projects ranging for various professional staff. I was particularly creative in this activity because when I was tasked to analyse political issues (such as honour violence in the UK), I had to produce original reports to provide my colleagues with a variety of angles on the issue to portray a balanced argument.

  • My activity helped me explore the political issue of women’s rights in the Middle East and the UK because it supplied me with an in-depth data base of resources as well as experienced experts in the field of human rights. From working with professional in the topic I gained great insight into, not only how the global political climate works, but also how an non-governmental organization like HJS can impact politics. I gained writing skills through undertaking new tasks such as transcribing for a speech.

Renewable Energy Placement

  • During the summer of 2011 I did a 3 days’ work experience in the Inner Hebrides in western Scotland working on community strategies for renewable energy usage. This was an interesting task because we travelled out to the remote islands of Coll and Tiree which are still reasonably primitive in way of life compared to mainland communities and we helped to solve energy problems as well as venturing out to inspect the new developments (new wind farm). I visited a community hall where they were looking to build a medium sized wind turbine and I sat in on a meeting between the community spokesman and the people I was shadowing (Community Energy Scotland). This was a very rewarding 3 days because I learnt about how energy is created as well as transported and also the difficulties of setting up wind turbines with the community often against the Idea.

WCRS

  • In late August of 2013 I spent a week at WCRS, an advertising company based in London and part of the Engine group. During the week, I worked on my own creative brief that I presented to a creative director at the end of the week and I also visited a shoot for a new Capital One Cup advert. Most of the week i was working on my own brief which was to design a new Change 4 Life advert. This was interesting because it let me really delve into the writing and research behind any advert. At the end of the week I went to a studio to watch the filming of a new advert. This was great because I learnt how adverts are actually produced. From this week I gained a good insight into what it was like to work in a large company and how a large business like WCRS opperates.

Tiger Kloof

  • In late October 2013 I spent a week on a charity trip to Vryburg, South Africa. More specifically we were staying at Tiger Kloof school. During the week the large majority of work we did was helping the local community and especially the local township called Hihuti. The work consisted of constructing and painting soup kitchens, making soup for over a thousand township school children, partaking in activities with the Tiger Kloof school children and helping to re-construct and clear up the Tiger Kloof grounds. The week was very rewarding and really gave me an insight into the difficulty of living and growing up in a harsh environment like a South African slum. It also helped me gain experience with working with people and helping out those who are in need. This trip has really propelled me into looking for other charity trips that I can help out with.
